Finding the right toilet for a van is often a long process of trial and error. After years of traveling through all four seasons, we have experimented with almost every setup imaginable. We started with the basic bucket method and eventually moved through three different brands of portable cassette toilets. While those options certainly did the job and got us through many trips, they always seemed to come with a list of maintenance chores or potential points of failure that made van life feel a bit more like work.
When we finally switched to the Trelino EVO – Large, it felt like we had finally found the solution that matched our travel style. The most immediate benefit is the sheer simplicity of the design. In a small space that is constantly bouncing down washboard roads, things tend to break. The Trelino eliminates that stress because it has no moving parts, no complicated handles to pull, and no rubber seals that will eventually dry out or leak over time.
Even though we were already in the habit of using bags for solid waste in our previous toilets to avoid heavy cleaning, the cassette systems still felt over-engineered for our needs. We never used the lower tanks for anything other than liquids, which meant we could skip the harsh blue chemicals in favor of simple vinegar. However, those units still relied on internal flappers and mechanical seals that required constant attention to stay functional and odor-free.
The Trelino EVO – Large simplifies this entire dynamic by using a straightforward, gravity-based separating system. It diverts liquids into a dedicated container while solids go into a lined bin. This keeps things dry and, more importantly, keeps the daily management incredibly fast and sanitary. It feels like the unit was designed specifically for the way we already preferred to travel, but without the unnecessary weight and complexity of a traditional tank system.
The “Large” model is particularly well-suited for adventure vans like the Sprinter. It provides a sitting height that feels natural and comfortable, much like a standard household toilet, without taking up an unnecessary amount of floor space. The build quality is impressive as well; it feels solid and stable when in use, but it is lightweight enough to move easily if you need to access a storage area or clean the floor underneath.
What we appreciate most is how perfectly it facilitates the “bag-and-go” philosophy. Because the Trelino is built for waste separation from the ground up, there is no awkward maneuvering to fit a liner into a space meant for a flushing mechanism. There is no scrubbing out a gross tank at the end of a trip; you simply tie the bag, dispose of it properly, and you are ready for the next adventure.
The aesthetic of the Trelino also deserves a mention. Many portable toilets look like medical equipment or heavy-duty industrial buckets, which can ruin the vibe of a carefully designed van interior. The EVO has a sleek, clean, and modern look that blends into the living space. It doesn’t scream “toilet,” which is a small but meaningful victory when your kitchen and bedroom are only a few feet away.
Odor control was another area where we were pleasantly surprised. Because the unit is so effective at keeping liquids and solids apart, the typical smells associated with mixed waste simply don’t happen. By adding a small amount of absorbent material after each use, we’ve found that it stays fresh even during warmer summer trips. It achieves this without the need for a loud, power-hungry vent fan, keeping our electrical system simple and our nights quiet.
Reflecting on our journey from buckets to cassettes, the Trelino EVO – Large stands out as the clear winner for us. It’s the first time we haven’t felt like we were fighting against the design of our equipment. It solves the most annoying parts of van sanitation—the maintenance of seals and moving parts—by simply removing the components that cause those problems in the first place.
For anyone currently navigating the many options for their own build, we can’t recommend this unit enough. It is a professional, well-engineered piece of gear that actually lives up to the needs of frequent travelers. It has made our daily routine in the van much more seamless, allowing us to focus more on the road ahead and less on the logistics of managing our gear.
Would we recommend?
We would recommend the Trelino Large for 1-2 people. The simplicity, quality and design of the Trelino makes it worth the premium price.
