We started looking for a rear door carrier because we needed to make the most of the limited space inside our 144″ Sprinter van. Even though the storage area under our bed was a decent size, it filled up quickly once we loaded in our mountain bikes and camping gear. We also realized that keeping muddy bikes and smelly camp stoves outside was the best way to keep our living area clean and comfortable.

To get our indoor space back, we looked at several different ways to carry gear on the outside of the van. We decided against roof racks because they are difficult to reach, which led us to focus on rear door carriers as the most practical and convenient choice for our setup. Since we already had a great experience with our Backland rock sliders, we chose the OX Rear Door Carrier as soon as it was released. Because we already trusted the quality of the brand, we felt confident it would be the most reliable and effective way to carry our equipment.

Maximum Coverage & Protection

The OX Carrier is designed to help you get the most out of your van by using almost the entire surface of the rear doors. By turning the back of your vehicle into a complete outside storage system, you gain a massive amount of room to attach your gear. This large surface area lets you mount many different accessories at the same time, which keeps the inside of your van organized and free of the odors or debris that come with outdoor equipment.

Most other rear door carriers are quite small, which limits what you can carry and often forces you to choose which items to leave behind. The OX Carrier solves this problem by providing enough space to attach just about any combination of gear you need for your trip. Beyond just holding your equipment, the full-coverage design acts as a tough shield for your van. It reinforces the rear doors and helps protect the back windows from being hit or broken by accident.

Many other brands make the top of their carriers smaller to leave the windows uncovered, but that actually reduces your storage space and leaves the glass vulnerable to being struck by the gear attached to the rack. The OX Carrier takes a more versatile approach. If you want to see out of your back windows, you can simply take out a removable panel. This gives you a clear view while still keeping the upper part of the frame in place, ensuring that even items mounted high up stay bolted down tight and do not wobble while you drive.

Engineered for Heavy Loads

Having plenty of space for your gear is only helpful if the carrier is strong enough to hold the weight. The OX Carrier is built to handle AT LEAST 200 lbs per door, which helps ensure that your equipment stays safe and secure while you travel. The system connects to the rear door at four different points to create a very stable foundation.

The main weight is supported by 180° hinges, while upper and lower anchors help spread the load evenly across the door. These attachment points are important because they steady the carrier and stop it from rattling or vibrating, even when it is fully loaded with heavy gear. There is also a special pressure plate (not shown in the image below) that sits between the upper and lower points. This plate adds extra stability without adding an anchor point on the vertical middle of the door, which is often the weakest area.

It is important to note that because Mercedes-Benz does not provide official weight limits for their rear door hinges, Backland Expedition Gear (or any carrier manufacturer) cannot guaranteed the upper load limit. However, this multi-point mounting system is specifically engineered to provide the most strength and stability possible for your storage needs.

The OX System Foundation

Backland has developed more than just a rear door carrier; they have created a complete system of attachments that uses the OX Carrier as its foundation. These accessories are built to use the full width of the carrier, which helps you get the most storage space possible. This design allows you to do things like fit a larger gear box or even mount a third bike to a single door. The system already includes a variety of options, such as storage boxes, tire carriers, bike mounts, and propane tank holders.

While these parts are designed to work perfectly together, they are also very versatile. OX accessories can be mounted to other brands of carriers, and the OX Carrier itself can hold storage boxes from other companies. This flexibility means you can use the OX line as a fully connected system or simply pick out individual pieces to add to your current setup.

Would we recommend?

We HIGHLY recommend the OX Rear Door Carrier. It serves as the essential foundation for a suite of products that are true game-changers for adventure van travel; at this point, we simply cannot imagine owning a van without them.
