After completing our interior conversion, we spent over a year searching for the right side steps. When we discovered Backland’s APEX Rock Sliders on Instagram, we knew we had found the solution. We purchased them in 2022, and they immediately became an essential part of our build.
We initially considered retractable steps but decided against them to avoid mechanical complexity and potential damage during off-road trips. We needed a fixed-step option that offered genuine protection without sacrificing ground clearance. The APEX series from Backland was the only product that met all our requirements.
Functional Design and Versatility
While APEX Rock Sliders are built for rugged off-road use, they are equally effective as daily side steps. The 6-inch deep flat surface is continuous and free of obstructions, providing a much larger and more consistent stepping area than other designs. Finished with an INDY Protective Coating for all-weather traction, these steps ensure secure footing every time you enter or exit your van.
The symmetrical design is tapered at both ends to reduce the risk of “hanging up” on obstacles, whether you are navigating a technical trail or a tight parking lot.
To accommodate different builds, they are offered in two distinct configurations. The Regular style sits just below the pinch-seam for maximum ground clearance and a high-clearance aesthetic. Alternatively, the Drop style sits three inches lower, which is ideal for lifted vans or users who require a more accessible entry point. Regardless of the style, the functional footprint remains the same.
Structural Integrity and Protection
APEX Rock Sliders provide a robust first line of defense that doubles as a functional side step. Engineered with a six-inch depth, they extend slightly past the tire line to create a protective buffer against trail debris, posts, and parking lot obstacles.
Constructed from high-strength Canadian steel, these sliders mount directly to the vehicle’s pinch-seam using rigid brackets. This reinforced connection eliminates the flexing common in standard side steps and is stable enough to serve as a reliable jack point.
To ensure long-term durability, each unit is finished with INDY Protective Coating to prevent corrosion. This finish is designed for easy maintenance, allowing you to spot-repair minor chips or scratches to maintain full rust protection.
Aesthetics and Style
While performance is the main objective, the visual integration of the APEX Rock Sliders is just as impressive. Their clean lines and rugged construction complement the Sprinter’s silhouette, providing a professional look that matches the van’s off-road capabilities.
It is rare to find a product that balances aesthetics and heavy-duty functionality so effectively. After years of use, we believe these sliders remain the ultimate solution for side steps and vehicle protection on the market.
Aluminum Version
Backland now offers an aluminum version of their APEX Side Steps. While these retain many of the same features as the steel version, they are designed primarily for utility rather than heavy-duty protection. They ARE NOT rock sliders and are less impact-resistant than their steel counterparts. However, if your priorities are being rust-proof and reduced weight, the aluminum version is an excellent alternative.
Because we have the steel APEX Rock Sliders, we haven’t personally tested the aluminum steps. However, based on our experience with Backland’s high standards for quality and design, we are confident they are a well-built and reliable product.
DIY Friendly Installation
APEX Rock Sliders are designed for a straightforward, DIY-friendly installation. While a second set of hands is helpful, a single person can complete the process using a floor jack and wood blocks. This intentional design distinguishes them from many other carriers and side steps on the market. For a visual guide, the following video demonstrates Simon from Backland installing the sliders on a Sprinter van.
Would we recommend?
Backland Expedition Gear’s APEX Rock Sliders/Side Steps are THE BEST SIDE STEPS we have seen for Sprinter vans. The combination of functionality, safety, protection, strength and beauty make APEX Rock Sliders/Side Steps an easy recommendation for anyone upfitting a van or replacing an inferior product.
While we have thankfully not needed to fully utilize the rock slider feature, we have hit objects, and the steps still look and perform like they did the day we first had them installed. Knowing the build quality and how the owners of Backland Expedition Gear use and test their products on their own van, I am sure that when the day comes, these will protect our van.
